Purpose:
Measuring your head circumference is essential for fitting your custom made hat.

Tools Needed:

  • Flexible measuring tape (cloth or plastic)
  • Mirror (optional, for self-measurement)
  • Pen and paper (for recording measurements)

Step-by-Step Process:

  • Preparation:
    • If you have thick hair, flatten it as much as possible to ensure the tape measure sits close to the scalp.
    • Remove any headwear or accessories that could interfere with the measurement.
  • Positioning the Tape:
    • Locate the widest point of the head. This is usually about an inch above the eyebrows in front and at the point where the back of the head protrudes the most.
    • Position the measuring tape at this point. It should sit above the ears, encompassing the back of the head, and rest at the same height all the way around (see Figures 1A and 1B).
  • Taking the Measurement:
    • Gently wrap the measuring tape around the head, ensuring it is snug but not tight. The tape should lie flat against the skull without causing indentation.
    • For self-measurement, stand in front of a mirror to ensure the tape is level and correctly placed.
    • Hold the end of the tape at the forehead near the temple without letting go of the other end (Figure 1B).
  • Reading the Measurement:
    • Look for the number that lines up with the end of the tape measure (Figure 1C). This is the circumference of the head.
    • It’s important to look straight ahead while reading the measurement to avoid slanting the tape.
  • Double-Check:
    • Repeat the measurement two or three times to ensure accuracy. If you get different numbers, use the largest one.
  • Record the Measurement:
    • Write down the measurement immediately to avoid forgetting it. Round up to the nearest 1/8th of an inch or 1 mm.
  • Enter Measurement in the Contact Form:
    • Very Important: Information needed to create your custom fitting hat.

Tips:

  • Always measure in front of a mirror if measuring yourself.
  • Make sure the tape is not twisted and remains horizontal around the head.
  • Do not pull the tape too tight; it should rest comfortably on the head.
  • If you’re in between sizes, choose the larger size for a more comfortable fit.

After Measurement:

  • If the measurement is for a medical purpose, share it with the healthcare provider for their records.
  • For headwear, consider the shape of the head and any personal preferences for tightness when choosing a size.

Remember, a proper fit is crucial, especially for comfort.
